DevBlog #4 - Ear Candy

Getting it to sound just right
One of the most important factors for an entertaining experience is great sound. Without punchy gunshots, deep explosions, and a convincing atmosphere, much of the game's "oomph" is lost.
Sound Sample
This blog focuses specifically on the sound design for the orbital re-entry of objective equipment, which players are required to drop in from the Ark.

The Workflow
Believe it or not, but I am mainly using the OpenSource software Audacity to mix and master the sound effects of earths edge.
The process starts with identifying and timing the animations critical events like the orbital re-entry, touchdown, flame bursts, and so on. With that structure in place, I source or record audio elements and layer them to produce the sound profile you've just heard!

This Objective Equipment Drop SFX, for example, consists of sounds like:
- Car suspension
- Jet engines
- "generic" hydraulics
- Propane torch flames
- Ratchet clicking
- etc.
All of these sounds get tweaked in different ways, and some end up sounding nothing like they did originally.
